Papers consist primarily of correspondence; reports, minutes, agendas, photographs, itineraries, mailing lists, memoranda, research papers, articles, addresses, proposals, and miscellaneous documents are also included. These relate to Bigelow's work in African education during the 1960s-1970s, particularly his involvement with international associations of academics concerned with African education, organizations for which Teachers College acted as a contractor providing services in research in training, and organizations to which Teachers College was otherwise committed. These include Afro-Anglo-American Program in Teacher Education (of which Bigelow was Executive Director); Association for Teacher Education in Africa; Overseas Liaison Committee of the American Council on Education; Africa Liaison Committee of the American Council on Education; Education and World Affairs; the Peace Corps; Teachers for East Africa; Teacher Education for East Africa; the Institute of International Studies at Teachers College; the Provisional Council of the University of Zambia (of which Bigelow was a member); University of East Africa (whose annual conferences on education Bigelow attended). Documents also reflect Bigelow's chairmanship of the Commission on Teacher Education, 1936-1944; the Conference on Educational Problems of Special Cultural Groups, Teachers College, 1949; and his attendance at UNESCO conferences on education, 1940s-1960s.
